Preroughening and reentrant layering transitions on triangular lattice substrates.

چکیده
Recent ellipsometric and calorimetric studies of argon and krypton adsorbed on triangular lattice graphite substrates have found a novel sequence of apparent reentrant layering transitions between integer-plus-one-half coverages. Related behavior has been demonstrated in a Monte Carlo study by Phillips, Zhang, and Larese. In contrast to arguments made by these authors, however, we use solidon-solid models that include a substrate potential to demonstrate that this behavior should be expected to arise out of the physics that produces roughening and preroughening of a bulk crystal surface, which then provides a unified picture of both the experiments and the simulation results.

We study in light of recent ellipsometry, vapor pressure isotherm and specific-heat measurements on the thermodynamics of adsorbed thin films on graphite, the connection between the layering phase diagrams of thin films on periodic substrates and the thermodynamics of the solid-vapor interface of a semi-infinite crystal. The latter is the limit of the former when the film becomes infinitely thi...
متن کاملReentrant transitions of Ising-Heisenberg ferromagnet on a triangular lattice with diamond-like decorations
The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg ferromagnet on the decorated triangular lattice consisting of inter-connected diamonds is investigated within the framework of an exact decoration-iteration mapping transformation. It is shown that the diamond-like decoration by a couple of the Heisenberg spins gives rise to a diverse critical behaviour including reentrant phase transitions with tw...

We present heat-capacity data detailing the evolution of the first six layers of argon adsorbed on graphite foam. The second and third layers have liquid-solid-gas triple points similar to the first layer. These layers exhibit a phase diagram consisting of two-dimensional solid, liquid, and gas phases on top of a solid film. Above the temperatures of the individual-layer triple points, the melt...
متن کاملAnalog of surface preroughening in a two-dimensional lattice Coulomb gas.
Elaborating on previous theoretical treatments of the roughening transition, I provide the exact mapping of a surface model which undergoes both roughening and preroughening onto a mixture of unit and double charges living on the square lattice. Depending on the model parameters, the preroughening transition of the surface can be either continuous or discontinuous. Using the surface temperature...
متن کاملZippering and intermeshing: Novel phase diagrams for interfaces and films.
New surface and layering phase diagrams are proposed based on generalized sine-Gordon models with and without a substrate potential. In particular, we find that the preroughening transition can be driven first order, explaining “zipper” features in heat capacity data for argon and krypton on graphite substrates. For different parameters, we predict the existence of a novel variant of den Nijs’ ...
